“The Americans have weakened in the region and even in the world compared to the past, and the US leaders are trying to compensate for their weakness in the region but they will not achieve any results,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader made the remarks in a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the Iranian capital on Saturday.

Karzai arrived in Tehran to attend the International Conference on the Global Fight against Terrorism which opened in Tehran on Saturday.

Referring to Karzai's remarks about US President Barack Obama's promise to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “The statements of the US president are for internal objectives… but they have faced opposition even inside the US.”

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the US seeks to establish permanent bases in Afghanistan “which is dangerous because as long as American military forces are in Afghanistan, establishing real security will not be achieved.”

The Leader stressed Iran's readiness to cooperate with and aid Afghanistan to develop infrastructures and said, “Talented Afghan youth are capable of building this country, and the Islamic Republic is ready to offer them its technical experience and knowledge.”
