UNESCO slammed over Bahrain

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has criticized UNESCO for appointing Bahrain to chair the 35th session of the world heritage committee meeting in Paris.
The commission said it was hypocritical for Bahrain to chair a meeting of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization while it is destroying its own cultural heritage.

IHRC chief Massoud Shadjareh told Press TV that Bahraini authorities have destroyed over 35 ancient mosques, among them a mosque which was 640 years old, as part of the crackdown on anti-government protesters.

The commission has also organized a campaign to rally support for the removal of Bahrain from the UNESCO committee.

The meeting was originally planned to take place in Bahrain but UNESCO's Director General Irina Bokova moved the meeting to UNESCO's Paris headquarters due to mass anti-regime protest rallies in Bahrain.

Thousands of anti-government protesters have been staging demonstrations in Bahrain since mid-February, demanding political reforms and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds, including doctors and journalists, arrested in the Saudi-backed crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain.

Human rights groups and the families of protesters arrested during the crackdown say that most detainees have been physically and mentally abused, while the whereabouts of many of them still remain unknown.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have criticized Manama for its brutal crackdown on civilians.
